Following the Challenge Cup semi-final, the most recent round of charges from the Match Review Panel were made public.

After winning the Challenge Cup, three Wigan Warriors players were charged; two of them were suspended. Sam Walters and Kaide Ellis have been banned for their roles in their team’s semi-final triumph over Hull KR on Saturday.

After a late tackle, Ellis received a citation for risky contact, while Walters—who was making his Warriors debut—was charged with head contact. With a sanctioning grade of ‘B’ for both offenses, the players have been banned since they have received the higher end of the scale.

Luke Thompson was also charged with Grade B dangerous contact; however, based on his disciplinary record, he received a £250 fine but was not suspended.

For events in the game, neither Tom Opacic nor Peta Hiku have faced any legal action. Following a tackle on Jai Field, who was already on the ground, Hiku infuriated the Wigan players, and Opacic was sin-binned for ‘creating a fight’ after hitting Adam Keighran. The Match Review Panel examined both occurrences and concluded that no additional action was necessary. Opacic has not been punished because he did not strike anyone, and Hiku was found not to have made physical contact with Field’s head.

This week’s Super League charges are the only ones; there were no events in the other Challenge Cup semi-final involving Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants that warranted charges. Two instances were observed by Jake Connor: one had a Warrington player going over the advertising hoardings, and the other involved him retaliating and getting sin-binned. However, neither has witnessed any further punishment coming his way.
