According to reports, Sunderland is looking for a long-term replacement for Michael Beale at the Stadium of Light, and one “incredible” former Premier League manager could be the candidate.
Despite just managing 12 games since his return in December, Sunderland manager Bobby Baldwin was fired by the Black Cats on Monday because the board did not think he was doing a good enough job. The straw that broke the camel’s back was Sunderland’s 2-1 loss to Birmingham City on the road last Saturday, especially when the Englishman appeared to snub a handshake with Trai Hume as he departed the field.
Mike Dodds has been selected as the Championship team’s temporary manager through the conclusion of the season, and the search is now underway for a new long-term manager.
Will Still, 31, has a release clause at Reims that allows him to depart this summer, so a move for him could be feasible, but another name has also been mentioned.
Steve Cooper being eyed by Sunderland
Steve Cooper was fired by Nottingham Forest earlier in the season, and it has been reported by TEAMtalk that Sunderland is considering a bid for the Welshman.
“Since leaving Nottingham Forest, Steve Cooper is likewise unemployed. Despite his connections, he did not get the Crystal Palace position; instead, Austrian coach Oliver Glasner was hired to succeed Roy Hodgson.
“Cooper will likely be keen to re-gain his Premier League status and wait for the correct opportunity, but a club the size of Sunderland holds a lot of potential that sources say could be of interest to Cooper.”

If Sunderland can make it off, Cooper might be a fantastic high-profile addition. Cooper has just recently returned to the Premier League, spending much of his time there playing excellent football for Forest. Sam Allardyce expressed his admiration for the 44-year-old after seeing him lately, saying:
One of the few managers who acknowledge that he has too many players is Steve. Taking care of that can cause you to lose focus. It’s a difficult choice in the end, but you want to keep them all engaged, employ them if you can, and see what they have. Steve has handled these problems incredibly well and produced excellent outcomes.”
Cooper has a real pedigree that would make him such an eye-catching arrival at the Stadium of Light. He won the Under-17s World Cup with England back in 2017, a team that included players like Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho. Cooper shares the same agency as Trai Hume, Anthony Patterson, and Patrick Roberts.
The former Swansea City manager is known to favor an attack-minded 4-3-3 formation, so his ball-playing style will undoubtedly appeal to Sunderland supporters. However, if a Premier League offer comes in, that could pose a challenge for the Black Cats, so this is one to watch.
