New talent is needed on the offensive line, particularly at left tackle, to support the progress the Rams made in 2023. These five offensive lineman have the potential to become Los Angeles’ next immediate starter, much like Steve Avila did for the Rams the previous season.
1. Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson, C.
Regarding Powers-Johnson, my feelings are the same as they were regarding Tyler Linderbaum. skilled run defender with the intelligence to call the passes for an offensive line and an explosive punch.
Man-mover Powers-Johnson has the ability to stop forceful and cunning rushers. He can maneuver fluidly in open space, create traps, and block on screens. a reliable prospect who ought to do well in drills.
2. Troy Fautanu, OT, Washington
When Washington defeated Texas in the Sugar Bowl, this is what I had to say about Fautanu: A rising star for quite some time, he anchored an offensive line that dominated the big bad defensive line of Texas. Penix remained clean, not taking a single sack in the Sugar Bowl. The first-team All-Pac 12 selection has the strength, bend and nastiness to play tackle in the NFL for years to come.
Even though many people expect Fautanu to transition to guard, he has a lot of Jamaree Salyer in him. Salyer was expected to transition to guard but was called into emergency left tackle service when Rashawn Slater suffered a season-ending injury for the Chargers. I see Fautanu as being that but as a more polished prospect.
3. Amarius Mims, Georgia, O.T.
Mims is an athletic freak who gave up zero sacks in his college career. He’s built for an event like this where he will be able to show off his quickness and speed.
The downside to Mims is that he’s recovering from an ankle injury suffered in the SEC championship game that required surgery. He also only has eight SEC starts in his career. However, his tools and the play witnessed on film give me confidence that he’ll be a Pro Bowl-caliber player.
4. Jordan Morgan, OT,Arizona
Morgan is an interesting prospect who is rising up my draft board. I initially had him as a surefire second-round pick but I now see him going late in the first to a contender. An option at left tackle for the Rams to select at 19 or a player they trade back into the first for.
5. Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma
Another fringe first-round player who is my second right tackle on the board behind Taliese Fuaga, Guyton could be a player that helps the Rams reduce their budget if they move on from Rob Havenstein in the next couple of years.
Guyton is a risky selection as it’s clear he needs work but when he’s in the zone, he’s virtually unbeatable. A massive risk but he handles stunts well, has massive room to improve and considering he’d sit behind Rob Havenstein, he’ll have a developmental year if selected by the Rams.
