It’s said that you should never fall in love with a loan player, but what if the player develops feelings for the team?

Sunderland has been effective in using the loan market over the years, having signed players who have gone on to sign long-term contracts and others who won over fans during their brief tenure on Wearside. Every now and again, Sunderland loans out a player who performs above and above expectations. Naturally, supporters of the team want to sign these players to long-term contracts, and when those players also indicate their want to return, it just stirs the pot.

Here are five players who wanted a return to Sunderland following a successful loan spell

Yann M’Vila

The French midfielder was brought in for the summer of 2015, and he quickly made an impression on Wearside, winning over supporters with his 37 appearances and his contribution to Sunderland’s Premier League survival under Sam Allardyce. Every transfer window, M’Vila was connected to a comeback to the Black Cats; nevertheless, he just joined Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies have not yet seen action from the French international.

Marcos Alonso

The Spanish left back, who signed with Sunderland in January 2014, was instrumental in both the team’s “great escape” and their run to the Carabao Cup final under Gus Poyet. Alonso expressed his wish to return to Wearside after his loan agreement ended, and he has since shared several messages with Sunderland supporters on his Instagram account. The Spaniard, nevertheless, chose not to rejoin the team and has since played for Barcelona and Chelsea, two of Europe’s biggest teams.

Jonny Evans

Between 2007 and 2008, the Northern Ireland international played on loan with Sunderland for two terms, totaling 35 matches. Evans returned to Manchester United when his second loan term ended, and he has since made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils. Corry, Evans’ younger brother, is the current club captain despite Evans’s failure to return to the Black Cats. Corry claims that after learning that Sunderland had made an approach, Jonny informed him, “You’ve got to go.”

Fabio Borini

Even when the Italian joined the team permanently, Sunderland supporters had to wait a full year for Borini to make a comeback. In his 40 games during his first stint with the team, Borini scored 10 goals and assisted four others, including the memorable goal against Manchester City at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final.

Amad Diallo

The Ivorian winger has made it clear how much he loves the Black Cats. Amad has stated on numerous occasions that he would be amenable to returning to the team, and his social media activity this week has left Sunderland supporters wondering once more. Amad made 42 appearances for the team while on loan, scoring 14 goals and providing four assists. Supporters of Sunderland will be hoping for a Borini-like outcome.
