LATEST UPDATE: Former Sunderland defender accepts temporary position as interim manager and former boss accepts full-time offer

Before the anticipated appointment of a permanent manager in early April, former Sunderland defender John O’Shea will be in charge of the Republic of Ireland’s March friendlies.

Prior to Belgium and Switzerland visiting Dublin late next month, O’Shea, who ranks third all-time in the Republic’s record of appearances with 118 caps, has been designated interim head coach.

His temporary appointment allows the FAI more time to finish looking for a permanent replacement for Stephen Kenny, who departed the position in November.

O’Shea, who most recently served in a comparable capacity at Birmingham after serving as the Republic’s assistant coach under Kenny, will have support from Crystal Palace coach Paddy McCarthy.

Over his seven years on Wearside, O’Shea played more than 250 games for Sunderland. “I’m delighted to return to the senior men’s coaching staff as interim head coach for the two international friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland,” he stated.

“Leading the team into the March international window will be an amazing honor.”

“As all of you are aware, I have always taken great pride in representing my nation, whether it was as a player or more recently as a member of the coaching staff for the men’s senior team and the under-21 squad.

Paddy’s decision to join the team for the two games is terrific, and preparations will start right away for two elite matchups against high competition in Belgium and Switzerland, in front of our incredible home crowd.

“I’m hoping for some good outcomes and I have a lot of faith in this group of players to win football games.”

Those associated with the vacant Republic position include Lee Carsley, the coach of England Under-21s, and Chris Coleman, the former manager of Wales and Sunderland.

“We are pleased to confirm that the process for the appointment of a new men’s head coach is near completion and we are looking forward to announcing that appointment in April,” FAI director of football Marc Canham said, announcing O’Shea’s temporary appointment.

“Right now, the main priorities are helping John and his team get ready for the games at the Aviva Stadium and the forthcoming matches against Belgium and Switzerland.”

On March 23, Belgium will visit Dublin; three days later, Switzerland will do the same.

“John has developed a strong level of excellent coaching experience across both domestic and international football,” Canham continued, “and has recently been involved at both the Under-21 and senior level with Ireland alongside his considerable achievements as an international player and in his club career.” O’Shea was appointed.

“John has a great understanding of this group of players, and with Paddy’s guidance and support, we think this team is the best option for the interim.”
