Garry Monk, a former manager of Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday, has been appointed as the new head coach of Cambridge United. His contract will expire in the summer of 2026.

Neil Harris, 44, took over at Millwall after leaving the U’s after just 17 games in charge.

Middlesbrough, Birmingham, and Swansea City are among the clubs that Monk formerly managed.

After spending 14 months at Hillsborough, he was fired by Wednesday in November 2020, and he has not played football since.

Paul Barry, the majority owner of Cambridge, stated: “He is a highly qualified coach who has experience managing at the highest level. He impressed us all with his leadership abilities, thinking clarity, and his analysis of Cambridge United – both the squad and the club

“He has been waiting for the proper opportunity to return to the game, despite having had some recently. He views this as a project, just like we do, and we are happy that he has chosen to travel with us.”

Under interim manager Barry Corr, Cambridge has dropped its previous four games, three of which were against top six opponents.

Monk’s first game in charge will be at home against Northampton Town on Saturday. The team is currently four points above the relegation zone in League One, sitting in 19th position.

“We do, of course, all recognise that there is the immediate challenge of securing our League One future after what has been a difficult period for everyone at the club, following Neil Harris’ unexpected and sudden departure,” stated Barry.

“It’s almost like the season has begun. There are 11 games left. Every member of the squad, including the players, staff, and supporters, must work together to help us cross the finish line. We know what has to be done.”

Over an 11-year span, Monk made 270 appearances for Swansea before taking on the role of player-manager in February 2014, although temporarily at first.

He was sacked in December 2015 but was appointed by Leeds the following summer, only to resign after a single season following a takeover by Andrea Radrizzani.

He lasted only six months at Middlesbrough before moving on to Birmingham and then Wednesday, who were next to bottom of the Championship when he was sacked.
