Nick Moore, a midfielder, has been named the captain of the Port Adelaide SANFL.

The next Port Adelaide SANFL player to don the top prison-bar guernsey is tough on-baller Nick Moore.

Moore’s incredible year came to an end in October when he was bestowed with the A.R. McLean Medal, which is granted to the team’s best and fairest player in the SANFL competition. Moore is a courageous midfield player.

The appointment of Moore as the next SANFL captain, an honor that he says he more than deserves, excited new Magpies coach Hamish Hartlett.

Nick is really dedicated both as a person and as a player, according to Hartlett.

“He is the one who leads by example with his work ethic and brings the energy and intensity to training after a long day at work.” Despite his laid-back personality, he is driven to excel on the football field.

AFL development coach and former SANFL head coach Tyson Goldsack echoed Hartlett’s sentiment.

“Nick’s done the work and earned the right to win the awards and to be the captain of the Magpies,” Goldsack said.

“He won’t leave any stone unturned and will give everything of himself. If there’s a person to follow on the ground and at training, that’s Nick Moore.

“He doesn’t know how good he is. As a player, he is the kind of guy I can turn to and say ‘I need you to do this’ and I know it will get done. “

“We’ve given him the opportunity that he’s earned.”

The 24-year-old, a heart and soul player, spent two seasons with Woodville-West Torrens before finding his spot at Alberton. His unwavering perseverance and on-field determination have become hallmarks of his style of play.

He takes over for retiring captain Cam Sutcliffe, who captained the team for three seasons following 113 games played for Fremantle and Port Adelaide in the AFL.

Moore expressed how much it meant to him and his family to be awarded the captaincy.

Moore stated, “It hasn’t really sunk in properly.”

“I just can’t wait because family and friends who have supported Port their entire lives have told me how significant it is and what an accomplishment it is.

Playing consistent league football is the best thing that could happen for me. “Just getting the opportunity (to play at Port Adelaide) was a big thing for me. From there, getting confidence and belief in myself made everything a lot easier.”

“Looking at all the trophies and memorabilia at Port Adelaide, it’s incredible how strong and powerful this club is, and to be ranked first is incredible.”

In 2023, Moore let his football speak for itself. He led the team in tackles made and finished second in the league with 152 overall, or 8.9 per game on average.

In addition, he kicked 12 goals for the season, including three majors in a best-on-ground performance against West Adelaide in Round 11. He also averaged 17 disposals and four clearances a game.

On Friday, March 29, Port Adelaide will play Glenelg away in their SANFL opener.
