Carlton Palmer claims that in order for Leeds United to sign Celtic star Matt O’Riley during the summer transfer window, they must be promoted to the Premier League this season.

Leeds United: £25m Matt O'Riley transfer mooted at Elland Road on one condition

The former Leeds player was adamant that O’Riley would not entertain a transfer to Southampton or Leeds as long as the teams were in the Championship.

Palmer, though, thinks a £25 million deal should be sufficient to persuade Celtic to let him go should they get promoted. In January, Atletico Madrid’s £10 million bid was rejected.

Palmer stated, “Leeds United and a lot of clubs are keeping a keen eye on Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley,” in an interview with Football League World on March 28. At Celtic, he’s having an incredible season.

“Brendan Rodgers is interested in this player.”

He’s playing football in the Champions League, so I doubt he’ll quit to play in the Championship. If they were interested in signing, Southampton or Leeds United would need to be in the Premier League.

“I believe Matt O’Riley would only transfer from Celtic to the Premier League, and that would require a substantial sum of money. In the January transfer window, Celtic has already turned down £10 million from Atletico Madrid.

“Therefore, they will be looking for a fee of about £20-to-25 million for his signature, if he is available and Celtic were to let him go.”

Celtic to Leeds United?
Leeds first showed interest in O’Riley during the summer transfer window of previous year, when a rumored “big-money” deadline-day offer was made in an effort to seal a last-ditch Elland Road deal for the Celtic star.

Since then, the midfielder has contributed ten assists and eleven goals in the Scottish Premiership, drawing interest from Atletico Madrid, one of Europe’s top teams. As such, any agreement would be viewed as a major victory for Leeds.Leeds United Daniel Farke

First and foremost, though, is still the issue of getting promoted to the Premier League. Leeds, who are now in first place, will need to maintain their current level of play for the remainder of the season in order to get promoted automatically.
