The Boston Celtics won Game 5 106-88 on Monday night, capping the Dallas Mavericks’ stunning run to the NBA Finals. This victory handed the Celtics their 18th global championship.

Luka Doncic had a strong game to round out his first finals appearance: 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 28 points on 12-of-25 shooting.
Throughout the regular season, Doncic averaged almost a triple-double, led the NBA in scoring, and some even thought he should have won MVP over Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets.

He nearly averaged a triple-double in each of the previous five seasons, which made many believe that a championship would be in his future if he ever received adequate support.

Dallas acquired fellow perennial All-Star Kyrie Irving midway through the previous campaign, and they added P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford midway through this one to help shore up some vulnerabilities in their frontcourt.
Numerous individuals have chastised Doncic for his lack of defensive effort, lack of extreme conditioning, and poor offseason physical care.

Maybe a young sensation like Doncic will show us his best self going forward—not just physically, but also psychologically and emotionally. Sometimes, losing a championship is exactly what spurs a player to the next level of dedication.
