Pursuing promotions Leeds interrupted Wednesday’s winning streak of four games and continued their own stellar play, winning 11 of the last 12 league games.

Wilfried Gnonto completed the scoring after halftime, building on a goal by Patrick Bamford just before the break.

The Owls fought valiantly, but they were unable to break through the Championship’s toughest defense.

The Whites showed the cutting edge that moves them one step closer to the Premier League, while Djeidi Gassama came the closest.

After a cagey start, neither box produced any noteworthy activity until the 17th minute, when Illan Meslier saved the day for the visitors.

Problems were created by Marvin Johnson’s corner, as Meslier effectively fanned out to keep Gassama out of tight spaces.

Georginio Rutter was given a breakaway opportunity when Ethan Ampadu threw a long ball over the top for him to chase. However, the Frenchman was denied a clear shot by James Beadle, who was fast to react, and Akin Famewo saved Rutter’s second effort.

Before Leeds scored just before the half ended, it appeared that the match would end in a draw.

A telling cross from Junior Firpo found Bamford, who was waiting to slip past Beadle at the back stick.

The lead handed Wednesday a challenging assignment for the second half, and Leeds had little desire to assist.

Evidently encouraged, the Whites surged ahead in large numbers. Rutter was stopped twice, first by Beadle at his near post and then by Bambo Diaby’s opportunistic block.

But on minute 57, Leeds extended their lead, with Rutter getting the assist.

With the pass flawless, Gnonto burst past Beadle with a dash down the right side of the field.

As Leeds attempted to end the game quickly after the restart, the Owls keeper produced an incredible stop to deny Crysencio Summerville.

Wednesday, however, reacted and attempted to find a way back. This nearly succeeded when Meslier mishandled a long-range shot from Gassama, causing the ball to wriggle goalward and forcing Ampadu to hoof off the line.

That was as good as it got for the Owls, who, despite their best efforts, were unable to find a way past Leeds, who won handily.

Wednesday: Bannan, Musaba (Wilks 84), Gassama, Ugbo (Cadamarteri 84), Beadle, Valentin (Iorfa 65), Bernard, B. Diaby (Smith 65), Famewo, Johnson, Palmer (Vaulks 65).
