After spending just one season as the Philadelphia Eagles’ football coach, Matt Patricia, a native of Central New York, is searching for a new position in the NFL.

Patricia is leaving the Eagles, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, and “plans to explore other opportunities.” Patricia joined the Eagles in April as a senior defensive assistant coach, but according to CBS Sports, his contract expired and he was not signed for the upcoming year.

With an 11-6 record at the end of the 2023 NFL season, Philadelphia was eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the playoffs.

Despite setbacks in recent years, Patricia is anticipated to be among the league’s top candidates for defensive coordinator, according to NESN. After a 13-29-1 record as head coach, he was let go by the Detroit Lions in 2020. In 2022, he joined the New England Patriots as an offensive coordinator, and alongside quarterback Mac Jones, he guided the team to an 8-9 finish.

Just one of the Eagles’ final seven games, a victory over the New York Giants and Tommy DeVito, the team’s third-string quarterback, have been won since the team’s 10-1 start to the 2023 season. Defence coordinator Sean Desai, who was also dismissed on Sunday, handed the reins to Patricia in December, but Philadelphia’s defence continued to falter, allowing Baker Mayfield to pass for 337 yards and three touchdowns in the Wild Card Round.
