Matty Young, who has been with Sunderland’s Academy of Light since the age of seven, has steadily progressed through the ranks. He made his debut for the first team in a pre-season match against New Mexico United last year and earned his first call-up to the England U19 squad in November.

In February, Young embarked on a loan spell with National League side Darlington, where he flourished. The 17-year-old goalkeeper made 14 appearances, securing five clean sheets and aiding Darlington in avoiding relegation, an achievement recognized when he was named their Young Player of the Year.

Regarded highly at Sunderland, Young is seen as a promising talent for the senior squad, with some suggesting he could even vie for a place in the team next season.

As his loan spell at Darlington nears its end, Young has shared his plans for the future. He reflected on his experience in men’s football, acknowledging the adjustment required in terms of pace and physicality compared to U23s football. Despite the initial shock, he feels he has adapted well and is now focused on returning to Sunderland. With his loan spell being part-time, he has remained connected with the club and is determined to continue working hard and improving.
