It seems Max Domi, a fan favorite among the Six, may be facing an extended absence. Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe revealed after Friday’s practice that Domi is currently listed as day-to-day due to an unspecified injury.

The circumstances surrounding Domi’s injury remain unclear, but it appears to have stemmed from an incident during Thursday night’s game against the New Jersey Devils. In the second period, Domi engaged in a physical altercation with Devils defenseman Simon Nemec after witnessing Auston Matthews become entangled with Nemec on the ice. Domi received a five-minute major penalty for fighting, along with an additional two minutes and a misconduct for instigating the skirmish.

Throughout the season, Domi has remained healthy, participating in all 79 games with Toronto. However, his offensive production has not matched previous seasons, as he has scored nine goals and tallied 47 points. This output falls short of his performance last season, where he recorded 56 points while splitting time between the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars.

Domi’s NHL career has seen him move between several teams in search of a fit that aligns with his combination of skill and physicality. Since being drafted 12th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes, he has played for various teams including the Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Carolina Hurricanes, among others.

After signing a one-year contract with the Leafs last July, Domi has been a consistent presence on the ice. With 660 NHL games under his belt, he has accumulated 130 goals and 417 points, including 22 points in 43 playoff games.

The Maple Leafs currently hold the third position in the Atlantic Division, trailing by five points, with a record of 46-24-9.The Maple Leafs are currently trailing the Florida Panthers for the second spot in the Atlantic Division, while also holding a five-point lead over the fourth-place Tampa Bay Lightning.
