Last night at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-0, but not before Auston Matthews scored his league-leading 60th goal of the year and Ilya Samsonov continued to play well to record the 34-save shutout. Even Max Domi felt compelled to speak to Leafs Nation on social media following the game because of the fervor in Buffalo for the team.
Late on Saturday night, Domi took to Twitter to speak with the team’s fervent supporters, who packed KeyBank Center and gave the game the atmosphere of being played at home rather than away. In addition to expressing his gratitude to the supporters, Domi took some time to encourage a teammate as he commemorated Matthews’ historic night of hitting 60 in the city where the Leafs selected him first overall back in 2016.
“Leafs Nation was BUZZING tonight! What an atmosphere. What a night for 34! Huge w. Best crowd of the year!”
The crowd in the arena chanted “MVP!” and “We Want Six-ty!” each time Matthews leaped over the boards throughout the game. Every time Ilya Samsonov made a great save, they got rowdier than the business class that usually fills the lower bowl of Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena. It goes without saying that having a building that noisy all night long enhanced the game’s atmosphere and made the players feel it as well.
Although Domi didn’t register any points for the game, he did end up with a +1, going 3/4 in the faceoff dot and having one shot on goal and one blocked. One of the many reasons his teammates and the fanbase adore him is that, despite having played just little more than 12 minutes in the game, he was the first to thank the fans and celebrate his teammates. Given how well he has fit in this season, I’m sure many of us are now counting down the days until his extension is revealed. At this point, it feels like a formality.
