Last week, free agent cornerback Patrick Peterson made headlines by suggesting that quarterback Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers would be a “match made in heaven.”

During Tuesday morning’s episode of “Get Up,” ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. echoed Peterson’s sentiments, using them to illustrate the potential synergy between the Steelers and 25-year-old quarterback Justin Fields.

“This was a giveaway, basically, here he is. Justin Fields can work in unison with Russell Wilson. He can give you packages that give defensive coordinators not one, but two quarterbacks to have to defend against and prepare for,” remarked Kiper Jr. “The Steelers and Justin Fields is a match made in heaven.”

Wilson, who will turn 36 midway through the 2024 season, recently completed two challenging seasons with the Denver Broncos. Over 30 games with Denver, he posted a 63.3% completion rate, throwing for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, and earned a 90.9 passer rating before being released.

Meanwhile, Fields, who recently turned 25, had a mixed three seasons with the Chicago Bears after being drafted 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The former two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year recorded a 60.3% completion rate, accumulating 6,674 passing yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions in 40 games (38 starts) with the Bears. Additionally, Fields contributed 356 rushing attempts for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

With Chicago likely to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, many anticipate Caleb Williams to be their choice.

Following Pittsburgh’s signing of Wilson to a one-year contract, they promptly traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles.
