The San Francisco 49ers are known for compensating their players appropriately, and there’s talk that Trent Williams, their standout left tackle, may be in line for a new contract. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there are murmurs within the industry suggesting that Williams may seek a new deal down the line. Despite being 35 years old, Williams continues to perform at an elite level, though his age could pose some concerns.

Although he’s under contract for three more years and set to receive $22 million, his exceptional skill warrants consideration for a new agreement. Despite contemplating retirement previously, Williams announced his return for the 2024 NFL season, committed to playing regardless of the outcome of Super Bowl LVIII. With no championship ring yet and a contract extending until 2026, it appears Williams intends to stay in the game for the foreseeable future.

In 2021, Trent Williams inked a groundbreaking six-year, $138.06 million extension with the 49ers following his trade from Washington. Last year, the team restructured his contract, converting a portion of his 2023 base salary into a signing bonus, freeing up cap space and adding an additional void year. Despite the historic nature of his deal, Williams now ranks fourth among the highest-paid offensive linemen, with an annual salary of $23.01 million, according to OverTheCap.com. Players like Penei Sewell, Laremy Tunsil, and Andrew Thomas earn more per year. Despite his age, Williams remains a dominant force for the 49ers, widely regarded as one of the best in his position and among the NFL’s elite athletes overall.

He may seek fair compensation in annual salary or desire more guaranteed money. Amidst negotiations for Brandon Aiyuk’s new contract and impending payment for quarterback Brock Purdy, the potential renegotiation of Williams’ deal could complicate matters for the 49ers as they plan for the future. However, given San Francisco’s adept front office, they’re likely to find a solution that satisfies all parties involved while benefiting the team in the long run.
