Rangers sign Jose Barrero from the Reds and place RHP Carson Coleman on a 60-day IL.

Carson Coleman, a right-hander, underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2023. As he continues to heal, the Texas Rangers placed Coleman on the 60-day injured list on Saturday.

The Rangers also added shortstop and outfielder Jose Barreo to their 40-man roster when they claimed him off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.

Barrero, who turns 26 on April 5, is without minor league options after spending his whole 139-game major league career (2020–23) with Cincinnati. He was formerly the Reds’ top prospect; in 133 at-bats over 46 games last season, he batted.218 with two home runs and 17 RBIs.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected Coleman, a 25-year-old minor leaguer from Kentucky, in the 33rd round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Prior to the elbow injury, he was a highly sought-after talent in the New York Yankees organization. Prior to the MLB Rule 5 draft in December of last year, the Yankees had not added Coleman to their 40-man roster. The Rangers chose Coleman from New York’s Double-A affiliate.

Coleman will be subject to roster restrictions for the 2024 season unless he plays with the Rangers for a minimum of ninety days.
