In this series, I’ll be examining each position on the Green Bay Packers roster, evaluating their performance in the 2023 season, discussing offseason needs, and looking ahead to 2024.

Next up are the specialists. Overall, the Packers’ special teams had a disappointing year, notably struggling with field goals and extra points. While having a top-notch unit isn’t mandatory for success, it’s imperative for the Packers to avoid ranking among the league’s worst, especially given their high expectations for 2024.

“It’s about maintaining consistency,” remarked Matt LaFleur regarding the special teams unit. “Whether it’s kicking, returning, or in any aspect, the culture and mindset are crucial. We’re tough and competitive.”

Brian Gutekunst, Matt LaFleur, and Rich Bisaccia expressed early commitment to Anders Carlson, despite his rookie ups and downs, which are typical for young kickers. Carlson faced challenges, missing kicks in 10 of the final 12 games, including crucial ones. Despite this, the Packers stood by him, valuing his resilience and potential.

Carlson’s struggles were compounded by inconsistencies in the field goal operation, particularly with long-snapper Matt Orzech, who had a subpar performance per PFF rankings.

Punter Jack Whelan showcased improvement throughout the season, demonstrating accuracy and directional control. His performance contributed to a low punt return rate and solid coverage by the team.

Overall, the Packers’ special teams ranked 29th in Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings, reflecting missed kicks, penalties, and inconsistency throughout the season.

Looking ahead, the Packers signed Jack Podlesny to compete with Carlson. There might be additional competition for Orzech, potentially leading to changes to improve performance and cap space.

As for the punting position, Whelan seems set for 2024, but the team might consider bringing in another punter for depth.

With higher expectations for the 2024 season, particularly aiming for the Super Bowl, the margin for error diminishes. Carlson and Orzech will need to find consistency, while Whelan must continue his positive trajectory.

Despite Carlson’s rookie challenges, Gutekunst expressed faith in him but acknowledged the possibility of competition. The team remains optimistic about Carlson’s development and is open to exploring veteran options if needed.
