NOTE ON INJURIES: Gausman, Kahnle, Bednar, and Medina are all dealing with various injury concerns.

Kevin Gausman is currently experiencing “general fatigue” in his throwing shoulder, as confirmed by Blue Jays manager John Schneider. However, an MRI revealed no structural damage or injury, which is a relief. Despite this, there is understandable concern when a pitcher of Gausman’s caliber encounters any shoulder discomfort. As a precaution, the Blue Jays decided to have Gausman skip his scheduled throwing session on Monday, with plans for reevaluation later in the week. While his availability for Opening Day doesn’t seem to be at risk at this point, the Jays will closely monitor the situation. Alek Manoah, another pitcher, is also dealing with minor shoulder soreness. They form part of the projected rotation, which includes Chris Bassitt, Yusei Kikuchi, and José Berríos, with Bowden Francis being a potential replacement if needed.

Injury Notes: Gausman, Kahnle, Bednar, Medina - MLB Trade Rumors

– Tommy Kahnle, who missed game action this spring, is being brought along cautiously by the Yankees after finishing the 2023 season on the IL with shoulder inflammation. There’s a possibility he might not see action in Grapefruit League games until late in camp, potentially leading to a stint on the 15-day injured list to ensure his full recovery. Kahnle had a productive return to the Yankees last year, posting a 2.66 ERA and a 29.1% strikeout rate.

– Pirates closer David Bednar is dealing with minor tightness in his right lat, according to manager Derek Shelton. Despite not appearing in exhibition games yet, the team is monitoring the situation closely. Bednar, a reliable reliever, recorded a 2.25 ERA in 67 1/3 innings last season, leading the NL with 39 saves.

– Oakland A’s pitcher Luis Medina left a recent Cactus League game after spraining his right knee. There’s no timeline for his return, but he’s competing for the #5 spot in the rotation. If Medina starts the year on the injured list, Joe Boyle could be the likely replacement.
