Dillon will sign a one-year contract to return to Green Bay in 2024, but the majority of the money he has already spent won’t go toward the limit.

If running back AJ Dillon passes a physical, the Green Bay Packers are expected to re-sign him, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, and Indianapolis Colts were reportedly interested in signing the former second-round choice in free agency, so this comes as a bit of a surprise.

Following Aaron Jones’ departure, Dillon is now anticipated to support Josh Jacobs, the Packers’ high-profile free agent acquisition on the offensive line this offseason. Other than these two backs, the only players who can catch balls beneath

Emanuel Wilson, a 2023 undrafted free agent, and Ellis Merriweather, a misseason practice squad addition, are signed to contracts by Green Bay.

It’s interesting to note that the Packers may use this signing to free up some cap space by employing an uncommon cap mechanism. The team will take advantage of Dillon’s four-year qualifying offer, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. By allowing teams to spend up to $1.45 million on players who have played for the team for at least four consecutive seasons and are re-signing on one-year contracts, a four-year qualifying offer is intended to help teams hold onto hometown favorites for a little while longer.

That indicates that Dillon is just agreeing to a one-year deal.

however, and not a long-term arrangement. It’s hard to believe that he will be getting a sizable portion of the team’s 2024 cap space in light of that. No new information about the contract has been released as of yet.
