Panthers coach Ivan Cleary discloses the genuine cause behind Sunia Turuva’s unexpected exclusion.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has confirmed that Sunia Turuva was left out of Saturday evening’s NRL game against the Cowboys due to the emotional strain of ongoing contract negotiations. This decision came shortly after the Wests Tigers announced signing the 21-year-old on a three-year deal worth approximately $1.3 million. Turuva, a Fiji international, will join his teammate Jarome Luai at the Tigers next year after playing 35 games for the Panthers since his debut in 2022.

Turuva’s absence from the match in Townsville was explained by Cleary as a result of the toll the contract situation had taken on him emotionally. Cleary stated during the post-match press conference that the decision was made to give Turuva a break, acknowledging the significant impact such negotiations can have on a young player, not just professionally but emotionally as well.

In Turuva’s place, new recruit Paul Alamoti, who previously played for the Bulldogs, made a notable contribution to the team’s victory, showcasing his strengths with 181 metres gained and a crucial try scored. Cleary praised Alamoti’s performance and highlighted his potential for further development.

Looking ahead, Cleary confirmed Turuva’s return for the next game and expressed confidence in Alamoti’s ongoing growth and contribution to the team. The Panthers, currently ranked third on the NRL ladder, will face the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium on Thursday.
