Pat Kelsey, Louisville men’s basketball head coach, noted that the team at the Planet Fitness Kueber Center is feeling overwhelmed. It’s understandable, given that Kelsey and his staff completely rebuilt the Cardinals’ roster using the NCAA transfer portal. Now, they’re focusing on summer workouts and preparing for a hastily-arranged exhibition tour of the Bahamas in July, which includes 10 full practices.

Kelsey’s previous team at Charleston had a strong start, winning a record 31 games, but there’s no telling how this new team will fare initially. Last season, the Cougars had a rough beginning but finished strong with 23 wins out of their final 26 games, securing consecutive conference tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Kelsey hopes the upcoming weeks will lay a strong foundation for his first year at Louisville. The team will head to the Bahamas from July 28 to August 2, with games scheduled for July 30 and August 1 at the Baha Mar resort in Nassau. The trip not only provides valuable practice time but also an opportunity for team bonding.

The NCAA allows for eight weeks of summer training, with restrictions on the amount of skill instruction and workouts per week. The additional 10 practices in the Bahamas will be crucial for the team’s development. Kelsey emphasizes that this early preparation will put them ahead when official practices begin in late September.

Only three players have previously played in Kelsey’s system, and he acknowledges the challenges of integrating a new team. However, most players have at least one year of Division I experience, which should ease the transition.

Kelsey is optimistic, noting the team’s eagerness and receptiveness. Although it’s too early to evaluate individual performances or determine the starting lineup, he appreciates the hard work and competitive spirit his players are showing. The team’s motivation is also driven by many players entering their final season of eligibility, all aiming for a national and ACC championship.
