The Patriots and Mac Jones were simply not a good fit.

Whether Mac Jones’ tenure with the team should have extended until he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars was a decision that both the New England Patriots and Jones reached. The quarterback informed reporters on Thursday, shortly after the trade was completed, that both the team and the player had decided it was time to call it quits this offseason.

“I have all the respect in the world for those guys up there. They’re my first team, drafted me in the first round – can’t thank them enough,” Jones said. “We kind of just decided the mutual parting of ways was the best decision for both of us. And for me, it was just about moving on and getting back home and I can’t be more excited. For them, it’s about moving forward and turning the page. So really that’s kind of what we decided, and I think it’s a great decision.”

As Jones noted, it was rather obvious that moving on was probably in everyone’s best interests. Before Bailey Zappe took over as the permanent replacement in Week 13, Jones’ dismal play was a big factor in the Patriots’ 4-13 record from the previous campaign.

Jones never seemed to bounce back from Bill Belichick’s choice to replace Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator with Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, and he kept slipping from his strong rookie campaign. Following a lackluster 2022 campaign, Jones completed the season with 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions as New England’s offensive situation deteriorated even more. Prior to 2023, the team lost Jakobi Meyers, their top pass-catcher.

Mac Jones’s perspective on his tenure with the Patriots

In an interview with reporters on Thursday, Jones seemed to have no ill will against the Patriots, even if he had a difficult past two seasons in New England.

Regarding his three seasons with the Patriots, Jones remarked, “a lot of great learning experiences.” “I had the good fortune to work with some amazing head coaches and learn a lot from one of the greatest coaches of all time. I played a lot of games and started a lot of games, but things obviously didn’t work out the way I had hoped, so my mission was to sort of get the train back on the tracks.” I believe I can accomplish that here.

Jones once stated, “Every experience is a good experience if you learn from it.” You definitely don’t want to lose, given the games we lost and the events that transpired. You want to win every game you play in, but I don’t have any regrets because I know it can be extremely difficult to do in the NFL at times. I feel like I gave that organization a lot, put everything out there, and they gave me a lot in return.

“I will therefore continue to do the same thing in a positive way here, just being Mac and myself, and I will learn from Trevor and C.J. [Beathard] as well as the coaches who have a lot of offensive experience.” And it will be significant to me, which is one of the main reasons I thought this would be a good fit.
