Paul Finebaum explains playoff format in aid of Bulldogs Championship pursuit in…

Georgia has cemented its status as the gold standard in college football, capturing two of the last three national championships. Many experts again rank the Bulldogs as the top team heading into the 2024 season. This confidence mirrors last season’s expectations after Georgia’s undefeated regular season.

Despite their strong season, Georgia lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship game and missed the College Football Playoff. On The Paul Finebaum Show, Finebaum discussed how the new playoff format could aid the Bulldogs’ championship pursuits.

“Georgia had to be perfect last year,” Finebaum said. “They were regular-season perfect, but losing the SEC Championship game by one score kept them out. This year, a similar loss wouldn’t have the same impact. They have some margin for error. They could lose probably two games, maybe three, depending on when that third game occurs.”

Georgia hasn’t lost three games in a season since 2018, when their third defeat came in the Sugar Bowl. The Bulldogs are currently the betting favorites to win their third national title in four years.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Georgia the highest chances of making the College Football Playoff, reaching the national championship game, and winning the championship. They are also the favorite to win the SEC next season.

While the expanded College Football Playoff gives Georgia more room for error, it is unlikely they will need much help in contending for national titles under head coach Kirby Smart.
