The MLB introduced a new idea called Spring Breakout, which involves scheduling a special game for each team’s top prospects. When some of baseball’s most captivating players share the field simultaneously, several intriguing matchups are produced. One of those saw Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes taking on Baltimore’s Jackson Holliday, the league’s best prospect.

Certainly, the at-bat—which featured a six-pitch sequence—lived up to the expectations. Skenes is usually known for possessing a lightning-fast fastball, but Holiday was able to work a 3-2 count against him. To strike out Holiday, though, he took a different approach, launching a breaking ball that got the young player to swing.

Skenes certainly enjoyed the strikeout and showed his emotions afterward. He took a little strut off the mound and gave the belt buckle a little wiggle. When you can win a good on good matchup like that, a confident celebration is called for.

You can watch the full moment here.

In his Spring Breakout performance, Skenes was in control, and even though he hit Holliday with an offspeed pitch, his fastball was still very much in play. Skenes hit three heaters in the opening at-bat of the evening, clocking over 100 miles per hour on each one.

Six of his fastballs reached triple digits, with the fastest reaching 101.7 mph. Undoubtedly a unique talent who will soon light the Majors on fire.

Skenes, regrettably, will start the 2024 season in the lesser leagues. After leading LSU to the College World Series, he was selected first overall in the 2023 MLB Draft and only threw 7.2 innings in his professional career.

Despite a strong spring, Pittsburgh does not believe that all the necessary conditions have been met to declare Skenes.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington stated, “A lot of those boxes that haven’t been checked yet are not things he has full control over. As we looked at the boxes that needed to be checked for him to be in a position where we’d feel confident and frankly safe to consider him for the major leagues.” “It just comes down to where he is in his career and not having had the chance to go through all of the experiences that come with being a professional pitcher yet.”

At some point in the future, Skenes and Holliday will play for the Pirates and Orioles, respectively. For the time being, the Spring Breakout event piques our interest, as Skenes wins yet another round.
