The PCL’s ADF Veterans Program, unique to an AFL club, brings together former defense personnel and ex-AFL players for a six-week initiative. This program, commencing next month, aims to empower veterans by providing them with insights from past players and equipping them with new skills as they transition into their next phase of life.

Drawing parallels between the elite environments of both fields, the program offers strategies to address the uncertainties many face after concluding either career. Over the six-week duration, sessions will be led by past and present Port Adelaide players, skilled professionals, and local organizations. Key themes covered include goal setting, relationships, leadership, and mental health and wellbeing.

The State Government’s investment of $240,000, facilitated through Veterans SA, ensures the program’s sustainability over the next four years, including the establishment of an alumni network to further support the veteran community.

The Hon. Geoff Brock MP has praised PCL for their proactive approach in offering an innovative program to assist veterans in South Australia.

“South Australia is setting an example with this program, which offers veterans a distinctive avenue to reconnect with their community and navigate successful post-service lives,” Mr. Brock remarked.

“No other AFL club is extending support to veterans in this manner, and the Government welcomes such innovative initiatives aimed at equipping our service members with the necessary tools for a smooth transition into civilian life.

“I commend Power Community Limited for their leadership in this field and am pleased to announce additional support to expand the program, ensuring an enhanced experience for participants in 2024 and beyond.”

Jake Battifuoco, the General Manager of PCL, highlighted the significant demand for the ADF Veterans program since its inception in 2021.

“Over the past three years, we’ve seen 133 veterans participate in the program. The new funding announcement presents us with the opportunity to expand,” Mr. Battifuoco explained.

“We’ve had a waitlist previously due to high demand. Last year’s program reached full capacity within two weeks, demonstrating a real need in the community. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the State Government and Veterans SA to open the program to more veterans this year.”

This year, the program will welcome over 80 veterans, an increase of 30 participants. The additional government support will also facilitate regular events throughout the year, fostering lasting connections between veterans and players beyond the program’s conclusion.

Ash Muir, a former participant turned program facilitator who served in the Australian Air Force for 18 years, shared how the program has transformed his life.

“The transition for serving members and veterans can be incredibly challenging. Personally, I experienced a loss of identity and purpose, struggling to find my place in civilian life,” Muir revealed.

“I initially joined the program through veteran networks, seeing it as an opportunity for personal growth. Quickly, I felt at ease with the Port Adelaide Football Club. Their genuine support for defense, defense families, and veterans was evident.”

“The ADF Veterans program was life-changing for me. Not only did I form meaningful friendships, but it also set me on a path to rediscover my identity,” Muir continued.

“The genuine care and inclusion I experienced from PCL were pivotal in my transition. Being part of a club that genuinely values defense and veterans is incredibly rewarding. I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities they’ve provided me, opportunities I never thought possible.”
