Alaska basketball icon Trajan Langdon has taken on a new role as the President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons, marking a significant step in his career. Langdon, known for his legacy at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High, brings extensive experience, having served as the General Manager for the New Orleans Pelicans for the past five seasons and as Assistant GM for the Brooklyn Nets for three years prior.

In a press release, Langdon expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and his alignment with Pistons Owner Tom Gores’ vision for the team. He emphasized his readiness to begin the work immediately and build upon the foundation already in place, aiming to elevate the Pistons to competitive heights. Langdon acknowledged the franchise’s rich tradition and history, expressing enthusiasm for contributing to its legacy and serving the passionate sports fans of Detroit.

Langdon’s new role encompasses various responsibilities, including guiding roster construction and facilitating communication between different levels of management within the organization. As the President of Basketball Operations, Langdon holds a significant position within the NBA hierarchy, reporting directly to the owner and overseeing the General Manager.

Gores expressed confidence in Langdon’s abilities, citing his impressive background as a player, scout, and executive. He emphasized his commitment to assembling a front office in Detroit comprised of top talent and innovative basketball minds. Gores believes Langdon’s experience and track record make him the ideal candidate to lead the Pistons to the standard of excellence expected from the organization.

Gores further emphasized the importance of finding a leader who could actively engage with the team, inspire the front office staff, and deliver tangible results. He praised Langdon’s reputation as a hands-on leader and effective communicator, noting his ability to connect with people and articulate a comprehensive plan to foster a culture of success within the organization.

Langdon’s tenure with the New Orleans Pelicans saw significant achievements, including the selection of Zion Williamson as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and a playoff appearance with a 49-33 record. He played a pivotal role in crucial trades, such as acquiring C.J. McCullom, and hiring head coach Willie Green, contributing to the franchise’s growth.

During his time as the Assistant GM for the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2019, Langdon also served as the General Manager for the Long Island Nets, earning recognition as the G League Executive of the Year in 2018-19. His career in basketball management began as a personnel scout for the San Antonio Spurs from 2012 to 2015.

Langdon’s legacy on the basketball court is equally impressive. As one of Alaska’s most celebrated basketball talents, he garnered three Alaska State Player of the Year awards and graduated as the Class 4A state all-time scoring leader with 2,200 points at East Anchorage High. His achievements include winning the 1994 state championship and being named a McDonald’s All-American.

Continuing his basketball journey at Duke University, Langdon set a school record for the most career three-pointers made at the time, tallying 342. Drafted 11th overall in the first round of the 1999 NBA Draft, he made history as Alaska’s first NBA player, earning the nickname “Alaskan Assassin” for his sharpshooting skills and contributions to the sport.
