Potential $20 million signing for the Defensive Player of the Year

Stephon Gilmore

The 33-year-old cornerback Stephon Gilmore is a veteran that the Green Bay Packers could potentially give another chance to sign. The organization has been unusually active in free agency.

There are still a couple free agency alternatives that Cem Yolbulan of Dairyland Express provided that the Packers could consider. Notably, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and offensive tackle Donovan Smith were also Super Bowl champions by coincidence.

Gilmore was the most prominent free agent Yolbulan brought up, pointing out that a short-term arrangement may be advantageous to both sides.

“On the other side of Alexander, a one-year veteran signing would do wonders for this team,” Yolbulan added. “And right now, Stephon Gilmore might be your best bet.”

The Packers Almost Made a Trade

Regarding Stephon Gilmore
For some Packers fans, Gilmore might seem like an unexpected free agent target, but general manager Brian Gutekunst recently made an attempt to sign the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year.

Following reports that the New England Patriots would release Gilmore in 2021, Gilmore declared his desire to play for the Packers. Sadly, the Packers were unable to reach an agreement because of the salary cap, and as a result, the outstanding cornerback was acquired by the Carolina Panthers for a sixth-round pick.

Since that transaction, Gilmore has been traded throughout the league. Before joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 after playing just one season with the Panthers, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

after a year.

Gilmore is now a free agent once more, but in the nearly month that free agency has been available, he has not been signed by a team. He has five Pro Bowl trips, two first-team All-Pro selections, a Super Bowl ring, and Defensive Player of the Year recognition in 2019 after leading the league in pass breakups and interceptions with six.

Gilmore is probably over his prime as a football player at 33 years old. At cornerback, he could still be a seasoned leader in a locker room full of young players and rookies (apart from Jaire Alexander).

Other Green Bay Cornerback Choices
The Packers may pursue an experienced player like as Gilmore; however, sustaining the youth movement on both sides of the

Ball might be the wiser move in the long run.

This offseason, general manager Brian Gutekunst has concentrated on improving Green Bay’s secondary. In addition to re-signing slot corner and return specialist Keisean Nixon, the Packers signed Xavier McKinney to a four-year, $68 million contract, making one of their greatest free agent blockbusters in recent memory.

The Packers don’t appear to be finished there, though. The team has scheduled many visits from top-30 prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft class to play cornerback. Names include defensive back Ja’Quan Sheppard of Maryland and slot corner Jerrian Jones of Florida State.

There is also a lot of speculation in mock drafts that the Packers could select a cornerback prospect in the first round. Cooper DeJean, an Iowa defensive back, is still one of the best players made fun of for theThe 25th overall pick in this year’s draft went to the Packers.
