Radz fired him: Former Leeds United boss is now vying for Sunderland position – Report

Rene Maric, a former Leeds United coach who left Elland Road after Jesse Marsch was fired, is one of the candidates for the open Sunderland position before the summer.

When it comes to managers, the Championship has been quite harsh this season, but some clubs have suddenly found some real gems.

Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna is a great example, and the Championship’s top management prospects include Danny Rohl, Michael Carrick, Liam Rosenior, Carlos Corberan, Enzo Maresca, and Michael Carrick, all of whom rose from assistant positions.

Sunderland want ex-Leeds coach Rene Maric – Report

At the back end of April, it was claimed that Sunderland – still without a permanent head coach – had kept tabs on Bayern Munich U19 boss Rene Maric as a potential appointment.

According to i News, the 31-year-old is currently on Stadium of Light’s shortlist to succeed temporary manager Mike Dodds.

Naturally, Maric was a member of Jesse Marsch’s coaching team at Elland Road before to the American’s dismissal in February 2023 due to a string of unsatisfactory performances.

Maric emerging as interesting coaching prospect

It was hard for Maric or any coach to stand out or make a totally positive name for themselves during Marsch’s tenure – as it was a largely rough period for Leeds with performances not nearly good enough in the Premier League.

Maric is now Bayern Munich’s U19 coach, and has recently spoken about his experience in West Yorkshire, via Training Ground Guru:

“Having a young squad, the idea was to have a coach who had a track record of developing talent. In the end, in terms of why it didn’t work out, it’s not easy to say. There are things that you can say, like the expected goals numbers were better than the rest showed. In terms of the absolute amount of running and sprinting, we were still top three in the league.

“I believe that Manchester City, Leeds, and Leicester were the only three teams with positive net spend. Leeds and Leicester were demoted, while City emerged victorious. Nevertheless, you can always try to explain things by using these items as contributing variables.

But it was unsuccessful. I’m honest and can only speak about myself. Looking back, there are certain things I wish I had done differently. It’s apparent that I tried my hardest. I was unable to carry that out. Ultimately, I attended the next two games and was in the stands after I was dismissed. I made some wonderful friends, some of whom I still stay in contact with.

“At that time, there was also considerable unrest regarding the high-ups; this is typical when selling a club because every choice has a secondary discussion topic. Now, are you up for the task? Do you carry it out afterwards? After that, things may slow down. That is typical. That’s not always the people; that’s just a component of the circumstances.

“It’s just disappointing that a historically significant team with a passionate fan base couldn’t finish the season.” I’m still not happy at all. I keep tabs on every outcome. I communicated with the recently hired coaching staff, offering suggestions, criticism, and well wishes. And for a fantastic team, I believe they’re doing a fantastic job.

It seems like Sunderland made a wise appointment.

Because Marsch was the head coach and that’s simply the way things operate, Maric wasn’t able to really show off his tactical prowess too much at Leeds.

But while all of the aforementioned assistants are earning a reputation for themselves in the game, Mikel Arteta has a chance to steal the Premier League title from Pep Guardiola, the man who taught him everything.

With Maric, it would be very interesting to see how he gets on after very little insight into his methods while he was at Leeds – all the noises are that he’s a coach to keep an eye on.
