Rams Re-Sign Wide Receiver Tyler Johnson To One-Year Contract.

The Los Angeles Rams were worried about who might be Matthew Stafford’s backup option after Cooper Kupp before they stumbled upon the hidden gem that was 2023 fifth-round draft pick Puka Nacua from BYU, who went on to have one of the all-time great rookie wide receiver seasons. Tyler Johnson was one possible choice.

The Rams brought in plenty of wide receiver help to see if someone would separate themselves from the pack. Johnson had made a name for himself as a quality option for Tom Brady during his final two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a lost season with the Houston Texans in 2022, he signed in L.A. on a one-year contract. Once Nakua broke out, Johnson found himself at the bottom of the depth chart.

In Week 18 of the previous season, Johnson made one appearance for the Rams, catching two passes for eight yards and a touchdown against the San Francisco Giants as the team rested starters in anticipation of the Playoffs. Nevertheless, the Rams appreciated Johnson’s contributions to the offense off the field, and they are compensating him by re-signing him for a further season through Team IFA:

Johnson is ranked as the sixth receiver on the Rams depth chart going into the NFL Draft, where the team has expressed interest in potentially selecting a receiver. The starting lineup consists of Kupp, Nacua, and Demarcus Robinson, a free agent addition; Tutu Atwell, Ben Skowronek, and Johnson make up the reserves.

Johnson is likely to be drafted by the Rams in the wide receiver class, therefore it’s unlikely that he will play. However, the veteran of five years will keep working should a chance to work come along.

Carson Wentz, the former No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft, signed a contract with the Chiefs. Wentz was the backup quarterback for the Rams during the second half of the 2023 season. Wentz, though, had to look for another place to live after the Rams decided to use Jimmy Garoppolo as their backup in 2024. And he did so fast, agreeing to join the Kansas City Chiefs as superstar Patrick Mahomes’ new backup quarterback.

Wentz hopes to return to the starting lineup in the future, but in 2024, he has a strong chance of supporting the best signal caller in the league.
