Ranking NHRA’s Top 10 Greatest Driver

The NHRA has unveiled its top 10 greatest drivers, a prestigious recognition celebrating the sport’s first 50 years of competition. These legends were selected by a panel of experts for their extraordinary contributions and achievements in drag racing. The final countdown to determine the No. 1 driver will conclude at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in November.

The Top 10 Drivers (Alphabetical Order)

Joe Amato: Five-time NHRA Winston Top Fuel champion and record-setter, Amato was the first to break significant speed barriers (260, 280 mph) and dominated Top Fuel with 52 event wins.

Dale Armstrong: An innovative driver and crew chief, Armstrong’s contributions include wind tunnel testing and the development of the lock-up clutch. He claimed 12 national wins and was instrumental in multiple championships.

Kenny Bernstein:

Known as the “King of Speed,” Bernstein is the only driver to win NHRA championships in both Funny Car and Top Fuel. He broke the 300-mph barrier and won 52 national titles.

John Force:

The winningest driver in NHRA history with 97 Funny Car victories and 10 championships. Force is a fan favorite and a trailblazer in sponsorship and record-setting performances.

Don Garlits:

“Big Daddy” revolutionized drag racing with the rear-engine Top Fuel dragster. A three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion, Garlits set countless speed records and left a lasting legacy with his innovations.

Bob Glidden:

Dominated Pro Stock with 85 career wins and 10 championships. Known for his relentless work ethic, Glidden’s success spanned multiple manufacturers and eras.

Bill Jenkins:

Known as “Grumpy,” Jenkins was a Pro Stock innovator, pioneering small-block Chevy engines and advanced chassis designs. His technical genius left an indelible mark on the sport.

Warren Johnson:

Nicknamed “The Professor,” Johnson brought a scholarly approach to Pro Stock racing, earning five championships and setting numerous speed milestones. His innovations continue to influence the class.

Shirley Muldowney:

A trailblazer as the only woman on the list, Muldowney claimed three Top Fuel championships and overcame significant challenges to inspire future generations of racers.

Don Prudhomme:

Known as “The Snake,” Prudhomme was a dominant force in Funny Car with four consecutive championships and 49 wins. His marketing prowess also helped elevate drag racing’s profile.

Fans can participate in an interactive poll on NHRA.com, ranking their personal top 10. The ultimate No. 1 driver will be announced in November, capping off NHRA’s 50th Anniversary season.
