Carlos Alcaraz declined to explicitly state that he will participate in the Madrid Open this year, even if it is quite probable.

As the defending champion and a fan favorite of the ATP Masters 1000 event, Alcaraz has very little chance of missing the Madrid Open. It is unlikely that he will miss this tournament because he withdrew from the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Barcelona Open in order to prepare for Madrid.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard declined to formally declare his attendance in advance of the competition, acknowledging that he still wanted to take some time to properly recover before his first match.
While acknowledging that he’s practicing well and feels well, he declined to indicate whether or not he would participate.

“There are still a few days until my first match; I trained harder today, everything is going well, and I feel good.” I don’t want to rush things or cause myself any problems.”

I don’t take anything for granted, therefore I can’t declare that I’m going to give it my all. Given my current state of mind and thoughts from this morning, I would be content to play three or four games.”

It remains to be seen if Alcaraz will make an appearance in the Spanish capital, but he is making progress and his camp has sent out encouraging messages. After two trying weeks during which he was forced to postpone his playing intentions, his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, acknowledged that he was beginning to see the light.

It is hoped that he plays in Madrid and then improves on it in the upcoming weeks in preparation for his intended French Open. He doesn’t have many matches on clay at the moment, but it won’t be sufficient.
