Red Wings make huge recall under emergency condition as Jeff Petry is also placed on IR

Goalie Ville Husso has been summoned by the Detroit Red Wings under emergency circumstances.

Given his relationship with Cam Talbot, who has had him in Edmonton and Los Angeles, Todd McLellan has relied on Alex Lyon far more frequently than he should have since taking the head coaching position in Detroit. Additionally, Talbot was a top-eight goalie prior to sustaining a minor injury just before the holidays.

To be fair, Lyon has been playing incredibly well since coming back from a lower-body injury, and it’s clear that McLellan decided to take the easy route. Regretfully, Lyon sustained an injury to his upper body during Tuesday’s 3-2 triumph over the Ottawa Senators.

Ville Husso showing his value, consistency for Detroit Red Wings

Husso was fairly good in his last stint when he was pressed into duty as the everyday starter with both Talbot and Lyon sidelined. His overall numbers this season at the NHL level are not very impressive. He’s 1-4-2 with a 3.47 goals-against average and 0.877 save percentage.

During his most recent recall, Husso was able to string together three good starts against Boston, Ottawa, and Colorado. In those games, he posted a 0.914 or better save percentage. Then there was that stinker against the Sabres where Husso was pulled after one period after allowing three goals on just seven shots. Ironically, the Red Wings eventually won that contest in a shootout thanks to Sebastian Cossa’s nice effort in his NHL debut.

The last time Husso saw NHL action was in mid-December against the Maple Leafs. The Red Wings won that game behind a nice effort out of the 29-year-old netminder, who made 23 saves, allowing just a pair of goals. This season with the Griffins, though, Husso has been beyond outstanding. He’s posted a 7-1-0 record with three shutouts, a 1.64 goals-against average, and a 0.942 save percentage.

Husso was fairly good on his last tenure when he was pressed into duty as the everyday starter with both Talbot and Lyon out. He hasn’t had a particularly strong season overall in the NHL. His record is 1-4-2, with a 0.877 save percentage and a 3.47 goals-against average. Husso managed to put together three strong starts against Boston, Ottawa, and Colorado in his most recent recall. He recorded a save percentage of 0.914 or higher in those games.

After giving up three goals on only seven shots in the first period, Husso was substituted out in that stinker against the Sabres.

Ironically, Sebastian Cossa’s strong effort in his NHL debut helped the Red Wings win that game in a shootout. Husso last played in the NHL against the Maple Leafs in mid-December. The Red Wings prevailed in that match because to a strong performance from the 29-year-old goalie, who made 23 saves and let up just two goals. Husso has been exceptional this season with the Griffins, though. With three shutouts, a 1.64 goals-against average, and a 0.942 save percentage, he has a 7-1-0 record.

Jeff Petry is placed on injured reserve by the Detroit Red Wings.

Additionally, veteran defenseman Jeff Petry has been placed on injured reserve by the Detroit Red Wings, effective retroactively to January 2. Due to an unexplained injury sustained against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Petry has been out of commission. He can make a comeback on Friday against the Blackhawks if he’s ready. Petry, 37, has played 34 games this season, averaging more over 19 minutes each night, and has one goal and six points.

Petry has once again been paired with Simon Edvinsson since McLellan took over behind Detroit’s bench, and the two have revived their relationship. Instead of making Detroit’s rear overly top-heavy, the modification helps balance it out.
