There’s been no direct further update on the condition of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry. But other developments indicate that the prognosis is not going to be good.
The Columbus Blue Jackets were defeated 5–4 on Thursday, but Petry left the game after an on-ice collision. Defense partner Simon Edvinsson needed to give him a shove so that Petry could get moving and get off the ice while play was still going on.
Detroit head coach Todd McLellan did not provide any details regarding Petry’s condition following the game.
“I can’t tell you much right now,” McLellan said. “Obviously, he didn’t return, so that’s never a good sign. He’ll be evaluated . . . and we’ll see where we’re at.”
Lagesson Recall by Red Wings
Another defenseman is needed where they are. No Petry update was planned for Friday because the Red Wings did not practice. Nonetheless, the team did make a roster change that is undoubtedly related to Petry’s situation.
Veteran defenseman William Lagesson of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins was being called up by Detroit. He is already been called up to the Red Wings three times this season.
When Lagesson initially joined the team, it was during the club’s November trip to California, but he saw no action. Last month, after Edvinsson and Ben Chiarot were injured, he was called upon once more.
On December 21, the Swedish rearguard made his Red Wings debut at Montreal, and he would play in two games with Detroit this time.
“It’s fun to be up in the NHL again,” Lagesson said. “I’m just gonna try to help the team win. Win a game, play my game hard, tough game.”
Lagesson has played in 23 games for the Griffins this season, amassed nine points (3-6-9) and 18 penalty minutes, with a plus-13 rating. At plus-13, he is tied for 12th place among all skaters and eighth among the AHL’s defensemen. In the NHL, he has played for Anaheim, Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto, totaling 102 games played.
