Following their unsuccessful pursuit of Dylan Cease, the New York Yankees are regrouping and exploring other options. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have expressed interest in right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen, who remains a free agent. The Chicago White Sox are also reportedly in the mix for Lorenzen’s services.

Lorenzen, 32 years old, earned an All-Star nod last season while playing for the Detroit Tigers before being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in August. He notably threw a memorable no-hitter for the Phillies. Throughout the 2023 season, Lorenzen compiled a 9-9 record with a 4.18 ERA across 153.0 innings pitched.

While Lorenzen may not possess elite velocity or overwhelming strikeout capabilities, and he occasionally struggles with consistency, the Yankees view him as a potential asset to bolster their rotation. This need for pitching reinforcement has become more urgent with Cease’s trade to the San Diego Padres and the likelihood of Gerrit Cole facing an extended absence due to injury. Additionally, Lorenzen’s acquisition would likely come at a more affordable cost compared to other high-profile starting pitchers the Yankees have been linked to in the past.
