REPORT: Aston Villa is reportedly poised to secure the signing of a “fantastic” player following shrewd maneuvering by NSWE, the club’s ownership group.

Aston Villa found themselves in the middle of the pack for net spend in the Premier League last summer, notably securing signings like Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres in significant deals. These acquisitions were partly offset by the sale of four players, most of whom garnered relatively modest fees.

Among the departures, striker Keinan Davis moved to Serie A club Udinese, Marvelous Nakamba joined newly-promoted Luton following a successful loan stint, and Jaden Philogene transferred to the Championship side Hull City.

However, the headline departure for Aston Villa was Cameron Archer’s £18 million move to Sheffield United, which earned the club a significant windfall. Despite being a product of the Villa academy and impressing during loan spells at Preston North End and Middlesbrough, Archer had limited first-team opportunities at Villa, making just 14 appearances without starting a Premier League game.

There’s a possibility that Archer’s story with Villa may not be over yet. According to talkSPORT, Villa could re-sign Archer if Sheffield United gets relegated, facilitated by a “clever clause” inserted into their agreement with the Blades. This clause would enable Villa to bring Archer back for a reduced fee if Sheffield United drops down to the Championship.

While Archer’s four goals in 16 league starts for Sheffield United may not sound impressive at first glance, it’s essential to consider the context. Playing for the lowest-ranked team in the division, Archer has displayed technical quality and finishing ability, earning praise from coaches and holding his own despite the pressure of a relegation battle.

With Villa manager Unai Emery reportedly having concerns about Jhon Duran’s attitude, Archer could potentially serve as a backup to Ollie Watkins in the forward line if he returns to Villa Park.
