REPORT: Commanders are predicted to win the NFC East; Justin Herbert is compared in the draft

Even with a new head coach and an expected rookie quarterback, the Washington Commanders have a strong chance to be successful in the upcoming season. According to nearly the Cap, they have the largest cap space in the NFL at nearly $73 million. That puts them in a good position to get assistance for Dan Quinn and their new quarterback. Quinn, one of the best defensive minds in football, will have to make adjustments to the Commanders defense, which allowed the most points per game in the NFL last season—more than 30.

The Commanders have $73 million in cap space, which they might use to rebuild their franchise. Because of their cap room, Colin Cowherd of The Herd thinks they’ll defeat the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East the next season. Cowherd adds that Drake Maye reminds him of Justin Herbert, therefore he believes they’ll draft him.

“Why Do Commanders? Love Dan Quinn, have $75 million in cap space, and have Kliff Kingsbury on staff. The Eagles and Cowboys, in my opinion, are vulnerable due to their advanced age and drama.

“I believe that the Commanders, who are a surprise team in the league each year, acquire Drake Maye, who is comparable to Justin Herbert as a complementary player.” played in a straightforward college offense and has more potential than most realize. Drake Maye seemed to be that person this year, but Herbert and CJ Stroud were as well.

Although those are bold remarks from Cowherd, it does indicate that they may be among the NFL’s best teams the next season.

Drake Maye Viewed as a ‘Slam Dunk’ Prospect

Maye has his faults just like every other prospect, but the tools are there. He’s big, throws a great ball, and can use his legs when needed. The 2022 season was the most impressive for Maye. He threw for 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He added 698 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground.

Joel Klatt of “The Joel Klatt Show” had nothing but praise for the former UNC quarterback.

“It puts the Commanders under pressure, and I believe they will take Drake Maye,” Klatt remarked. Without Williams in the mix, I think Drake Maye would be the clear top pick in the draft. This man possesses incredible talent.

Maye’s performance in the Holiday Bowl against a formidable Oregon team impressed Klatt.

“I had the privilege of calling one of his games last year; it was North Carolina vs. Oregon in the Holiday Bowl, not the most recent one between USC and Louisville. And Maye was great, even if the Ducks lost. Klatt remarked, “I mean, some of the plays and throws that he was making had my jaw on the floor for the most of the night in the booth.”

He continued by saying that he was superior to Josh Allen at Wyoming.

Commanders Need to Make the Correct Choice
The Washington Commanders can anticipate another dismal season until they get it right if they miss out on the No. 2 pick. They need a franchise quarterback to turn things around and start winning games.

Maye will need to pick up the nuances of the NFL, and this offseason’s decisions made by the front office will be the quickest method for him to do so. Every dollar should be utilized to improve their roster around the player they select at No. 2 with all of the cap space available.
