Mayfield and the Bucs have reached a three-year agreement worth $100 million, according to multiple reports, with the potential to reach $115 million through incentives. This deal marks a significant comeback for Mayfield, who was let go by the Browns following their acquisition of Deshaun Watson.

Expressing his excitement about returning, Mayfield told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, “I wanted a chance to come back. I love coach Bowles and the staff. I’m happy to be here and I want to win more in the postseason.”

In addition to Mayfield’s return, the Bucs have also managed to retain Mike Evans, Mayfield’s preferred target, with a two-year, $52 million contract.

Last offseason, Mayfield initially signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Bucs, where he had to compete for the starting quarterback position during training camp. Despite the challenge, Mayfield showcased his skills, throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, earning a quarterback rating of 94.6. He also played a crucial role in securing a postseason victory for Tampa Bay against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mayfield’s journey in the NFL saw him spend time with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams before his four-season stint with the Cleveland Browns, where he amassed a 29-30 record. During his tenure in Cleveland, Mayfield threw for 14,125 yards and 92 touchdowns.

However, Mayfield faced challenges, particularly during his final season with the Browns, where he played through a shoulder injury that threatened to derail his career. Despite passing for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns, he also threw 13 interceptions.

Following that season, the Browns made a significant move by trading for Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, relinquishing a trio of first-round picks and awarding Watson an unprecedented $230 million fully guaranteed contract. Despite the tumultuous end to his time with the Browns, Mayfield remains philosophical, stating, “I’m a firm believer everything happens for a reason.”

Mayfield’s departure from the Browns may not have been smooth, but he has chosen not to dwell on it, focusing instead on his future opportunities.
