The Seattle Seahawks have made a surprising move by acquiring Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders, despite no apparent need for a backup quarterback. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Seattle traded their third-round pick (78th overall) and a fifth-round pick (152nd overall) from this year’s draft in exchange for Howell and Washington’s fourth-round pick (No. 102) and sixth-round pick (No. 179) from last year’s draft.

While some may argue that the trade holds equal value on certain charts, many question the decision to trade a top-100 pick for a backup quarterback, especially when Seattle aims to improve its roster to compete with NFC West rivals like the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.

Schefter reported that Howell would compete with Geno Smith for the starting role. However, Smith’s recent restructuring of his contract suggests he’s likely to be the starter for the 2024 season. Comparing their 2023 performances, Smith outperformed Howell in completion percentage over expectation and Expected Points Added per play, indicating that Smith currently offers more upside.

Although Howell possesses undeniable talent, his inconsistent play raises doubts about whether he brings more upside than Smith. Additionally, Smith’s existing rapport with Seattle’s offensive weapons gives him an advantage. Given Seattle’s pressing needs in other areas such as the offensive and defensive lines, spending a high draft pick on a backup quarterback seems imprudent.

While having a high-quality backup quarterback can be valuable, Seattle’s decision appears questionable given their other needs. While many of Seattle’s offseason moves have been sensible, this trade stands out as a perplexing decision.
