The Cleveland Browns are continuing to refine their roster post-NFL free agency frenzy. In addition to their notable acquisitions such as Jerry Jeudy and Jameis Winston, and securing key starters, the team swiftly addressed the departure of special teams player Mike Ford.

Browns Sign Mike Ford Replacement Overnight

NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports that the Browns have signed cornerback and special teams standout Tony Brown to a one-year deal. Brown, who spent the last two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, reunites with Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, whom he previously collaborated with in Indianapolis.

The signing of Tony Brown not only enhances the Browns’ cornerback depth but also fortifies their special teams unit. With his experience and familiarity with Coach Ventrone’s strategies, Brown brings a valuable skill set to Cleveland as they gear up for the upcoming season.

Brown entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Alabama, signing with the Green Bay Packers in 2018. Initially, he saw action on both special teams and in the defensive backfield, leveraging his size and speed effectively.

However, in recent seasons, Brown’s role shifted predominantly to special teams duties. During his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts, he amassed over 500 special teams snaps compared to just 65 defensive snaps over the last two years.

Despite Mike Ford’s significant contributions to the Browns last season, his departure to the Houston Texans on a lucrative two-year, $4.5 million deal left Cleveland seeking a more cost-effective alternative. In response, they opted to sign Brown, a move reminiscent of their acquisition of Ford in the previous offseason.
