REPORT: Wisconsin Badgers Lose An Important Assistant Coach To Big Ten Team

Published

on

The Wisconsin Badgers football team’s defensive line coach, Greg Scruggs, is being hired away by the University of Michigan to take on the same position under new head coach Sherrone Moore. This is an unexpected event.

It is said that a large pay increase was offered to the former defensive line coach of the Wisconsin Badgers. Moore and Scruggs have a personal relationship as well, having attended the University of Louisville together.

The coaching staff members of the Wisconsin Badgers, led by Luke Fickell, have been the focus of programs with more financial resources, and this move underscores the continued battle that Fickell faces.

Wisconsin Badgers Lose DL Coach Greg Scruggs to Michigan

The loss of Greg Scruggs from the Wisconsin football team seems to be significant for the Badgers, particularly in terms of recruiting.

Ernest Willor Jr. and Dillan Johnson are two four-star defensive lineman that Scruggs signed during his first full recruiting cycle with the Badgers. In comparison, since 2016, Wisconsin had only signed two composite four-star defensive ends.

Fast-rising assistant Scruggs, a former defensive end for the Louisville Cardinals, offers a variety of expertise to his new coaching position. Prior to being elevated to full-time DL coach, Scruggs was the University of Cincinnati’s Director of Player Development. Before coming to Wisconsin, he spent a season as the Jets’ assistant defensive line coach.

However, Scruggs decided to go ahead with the move because of the appeal of a new opportunity at a major university like Michigan, the simpler recruiting sale, and the possibility of both financial gain and career progress. It is imperative to acknowledge that the departing staff members are not inherently “Wisconsin guys,” but rather are advancing their careers through chances at more esteemed institutions.

Luke Fickell will now have to start the Wisconsin Badgers football team’s fourth assistant coaching search this offseason. There’s no doubt that Fickell will be able to locate a trustworthy replacement because he has a proven track record of selecting excellent assistant coaches.
