Matty Young, a highly regarded young player from Sunderland, has been given the chance to experience life as a senior after going on a short-term loan to National League North team Darlington.

The England Under-19 international wrapped up the necessary paperwork to move to Blackwell Meadows on Friday, and he may make his Quakers debut on Saturday afternoon when they travel to play a South Shields team that is being managed in interim by former Sunderland academy head Elliott Dickman.

With this move, Young will travel down a similar route as Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel and former Black Cats goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who both spent time on loan at Darlington in their early career development before going on to succeed at the greatest level of the game.
Within the Black Cats hierarchy, Young is held in high regard after making an impression in preseason games held in the United States. Former manager Tony Mowbray praised Young for his performance in a 3-2 victory over New Mexico United.

It was comparable to the first game, the former Black Cats manager said on the team’s official YouTube page. Lots of positive things from us, and lots of things we still need to improve. We would have loved to see Matty, who had a great game and an incredible first half, achieve a clean sheet on his debut, so we are a little disappointed that we lost two goals in the final four minutes.

The youngster was named in Sunderland’s matchday squad for the first time earlier this season when he was an unused substitute in the goalless draw at Swansea City in November and earned his first England Under-19 cap alongside the likes of Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo and Brighton prospect Jack Hinshelwood in a 7-1 demolition of Mexico in November.

The Echo understands Young, who has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League champions Manchester City this season, is expected to return to the Black Cats’ Under-21s setup and train alongside Michael Beale’s senior stoppers once his loan spell with Darlington is completed.

With interest in the youngster increasing in recent months, The Echo also understands there is an expectation Young could sign a new and improved contract with Sunderland before considering another loan move to further aid his development next season.
