In recent developments, NFL free agency has seen a trend towards one-year contracts and signings of players who will face stiff competition to secure spots on rosters. The Cleveland Browns are reportedly among the teams to have agreed to terms with several such players within the past 24 hours.

The Browns appear to be bolstering their roster with the return of key players such as Za’Darius Smith, Maurice Hurst, and Shelby Harris, along with the acquisition of Jerry Jeudy via trade. Despite these significant moves, the team seems to be targeting lesser-known players who can fulfill specific roles within the lineup.

In line with this strategy, it was reported that linebacker Devin Bush visited Cleveland as part of ongoing discussions. Subsequently, on Thursday afternoon, reports surfaced indicating that Bush had indeed signed with the Browns.

Devin Bush, a first-round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2019 NFL Draft, was initially hailed for his impressive play strength, keen eye discipline, and high football IQ as a linebacker from the University of Michigan. However, despite the high expectations associated with his draft status, Bush struggled to make a significant impact during his time in Pittsburgh. Over the course of 52 games, with 48 starts, he failed to meet the anticipated level of performance.

Following the Steelers’ decision to decline his fifth-year option, Bush opted to sign a one-year minimum deal with the Seattle Seahawks. However, his playing time on defense was limited, as he only participated in 27% of Seattle’s defensive snaps. Nevertheless, he contributed substantially on special teams, logging 138 snaps in that capacity.

With his move to Cleveland, Bush is expected to compete for a spot on the roster, with an opportunity to contribute primarily on special teams. A change of scenery, coupled with the guidance of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, offers a chance for Bush to rejuvenate his career. Nonetheless, at 5’11”, he faces skepticism due to his undersized stature and will need to demonstrate his capabilities on the field.

It’s worth noting the familial connection, as Devin Bush Sr., Devin’s father, concluded his eight-year NFL career as a member of the Browns. As a free safety, Devin Bush Sr. appeared in 31 games, making 16 starts for Cleveland between 2001 and 2002.
