Arsenal has received a suggestion to consider signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle amid the Magpies’ financial challenges. Newcastle’s significant investments, particularly under their Saudi Arabian owners, have led to a £150 million loss, triggering constraints on their spending capabilities due to Premier League rules. Rio Ferdinand, on his FIVE podcast, recommends that Arsenal make a strong effort to acquire Isak, who has excelled in the Premier League with 20 goals in 38 games since his move from Real Sociedad.
Ferdinand points out Arsenal’s potential advantage in pursuing Isak, stating, “Why? They can’t spend… they’re struggling with [profit and sustainability rules].” He suggests that Newcastle’s financial difficulties might prompt them to sell some top assets, providing an opportunity for rivals to secure key players.
Arsenal’s pursuit of a forward in the January transfer window aligns with their aim to bolster their offensive firepower for a stronger challenge in the Premier League title race. Mikel Arteta’s team has been lacking a prolific striker, impacting their recent performance.
The possibility of Isak moving to a club like Real Madrid is acknowledged by Ferdinand, who emphasizes that there might be a crucial window of opportunity for Arsenal before such a move materializes.
Newcastle’s CEO, Darren Eales, acknowledges the potential departure of big names from the club, emphasizing that decisions will be made with the medium to long-term benefit of the club in mind. Bruno Guimaraes is another player linked with an exit, with a £99 million release clause in his contract attracting interest from top European clubs.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, praises Isak’s quality and predicts significant success for the Swede in his career. Howe acknowledges Isak’s ongoing recovery from injury but highlights his recent performances and goals as glimpses of his capabilities.
