Paul Hoover, the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals, observed closely while catchers Salvador Perez and Freddy Fermin practiced pitch framing. It was a regular light workout day early in the spring training season. Hoover, an MLB catcher for portions of seven seasons, paid close attention to every little aspect, including body language and glove placement. All three elements functioned together. Pitch framing is a useful tool to assist the pitching staff when executed properly.

Hoover has made a big difference in both catchers’ development. This season, Perez has displayed some of his greatest pitch-framing figures. “He has greatly aided me,” stated Perez. “We put in a lot of work. He speaks with the pitchers when I go to tell him about anything I notice. Hoover has established trusting bonds with a number of players. In order to share information both on and off the field, he is skilled at communicating on several levels.

That has a lot to do with his upbringing. Hoover’s parents are both hard of hearing. He experienced possible difficulties as a child in Steubenville, Ohio, that many people seldom pay any thought to. Hoover and his siblings were dependent on their community and one another for support. Occasionally, his sister would call the energy company or the nearby bank. At other occasions, when practice ended and he needed to be picked up, Hoover would call his neighbors to let them know.

Hoover claimed, “We were unaware of any different.” That was just the nature of existence. Our hands taught us how to speak, as well as how to interpret body language and sense other people’s energy. And we discovered a method other than speaking.Paula and Monte Sr. Hoover met while attending college. Monte was a track and football player. For over thirty years, he began each shift at the post office he worked at night with a McDonald’s coffee. Once back at home, he would assist Hoover and his siblings with preparing for school and extracurricular activities. He taught me the value of working hard so that you can support your family.
