The South Sydney Rabbitohs, who had a disastrous NRL season to begin with, have a shortlist of potential new coaches that includes former Wisconsin Warriors head Michael Maguire.

The current coach, Jason Demetriou, may be fired as soon as next week after the Round 6 match against the Cronulla Sharks, according to Fox Sports.

One of the most well-liked people in rugby league, Australia’s head coach Mal Meninga, is reportedly at the top of the list of possible interim managers for the team.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are at the bottom of the table in 2024, having just won once in five games.

According to the sources, the club wants to expedite talks with Meninga about taking over as manager for the remainder of the season right now.

Latrell Mitchell, Jack Wighton, Cameron Murray, Campbell Graham, and other current South Sydney players were a member of the Australian Kangaroos team that defeated Samoa at Old Trafford to win the postponed 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England under Meninga.

Ben Hornby and Wigan coach Maguire, who led his team to the 2010 Super League Grand Final, have both been mentioned as possible candidates.

The fifty-year-old, who resigned as New Zealand’s head coach on the international scene, will captain New South Wales in this year’s State of Origin.

He had been coaching the Kiwis since 2018, when he was announced as their new manager in November.

Back in 2014, Maguire guided the South Sydney Rabbitohs to NRL triumph as well. Sam Burgess was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal winner as the team defeated the Canterbury Bulldogs in the Grand Final.
