Rumor Mill: South Sydney Rabbitohs seeking assistance from a former Leeds Rhinos coach to revitalize the team

After a disappointing start to the current NRL season, the South Sydney Rabbitohs are apparently planning to draft former Leeds Rhinos coach David Furner to help turn things around.

The Rabbitohs are at the bottom of the NRL standings and have consistently performed poorly in 2024 thus far. The previous week, there were rumors that head coach Jason Demetriou would be fired regardless of the outcome of the Bunnies’ matchup with the Cronulla Sharks, which they lost.

But it looks like Demetriou will stay in the position for the next few weeks at the very least, and he will have some assistance from Furner, who was last year’s assistant coach for the Wests Tigers.

Reports from Australia now state that he will play a similar position at Souths.

Furner’s job will apparently be to turn around the Souths defense, which is currently giving up more than 30 points a game and doesn’t seem like a team that will be able to qualify for the playoffs in 2024.

Throughout his NRL career, he has held a number of assistant coaching positions, most recently with Souths. Additionally, he briefly served as the Rhinos’ head coach in the Super League.

But in 2018, he was fired after just nine months of a three-year contract; Richard Agar took his place.
