Ryan Day, the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, succeeded Urban Meyer in August 2018 as an interim leader before being appointed head coach on a full-time basis in December.

After six seasons, he is still regarded as one of the greatest.

The assignment of determining the top 10 college football coaches based on several secret factors fell to ESPN reporters. The only two coaches to appear on every ballot were Kalen DeBoer of Alabama and Kirby Smart of Georgia.

“Points assigned based on our reporters’ votes (10 points for first place, nine for second place and down to one point for 10th place), here are the complete rankings.”

What position does Day occupy? He ranks No. 10, according to ESPN.

“Day’s teams have played in a New Year’s Six bowl game or the CFP in each of his full seasons. They are 39-3 in Big Ten play and 56-8 overall over the previous five plus seasons. In his first two seasons, the Buckeyes won back-to-back Big Ten crowns (2019 and and 2020) and are 18-8 against AP top-25 opponents under Day.

“Unfortunately, those three Big Ten losses were against the “Team Up North,” Michigan, so some Ohio State supporters are wondering if Day deserves more criticism. His future will be greatly influenced by whether or not he can end the Buckeyes’ losing record against the Wolverines, particularly now that former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is in the NFL.”

ESPN continues to compliment Day’s offenses, noting that they have three times finished in the top three in FBS scoring and four times in total offense.

However, Day’s poor bowl record (2-4) at Ohio State detracts from his chances in this situation.

Day has given play-calling duties to Chip Kelly, the new offensive coordinator, for 2024, so those offensive statistics could get even better.
