The Crichton Medallist was unable to complete the preseason game against the Cats on Friday.

Jordan Ridley, a defender for Essendon, is expected to miss the start of the Bombers’ season after suffering a leg injury on Friday night during the preseason game against the Cats.

The disappointment ends a fantastic week for the 2020 Crichton medalist, who signed a three-year contract that would keep him at Tullamarine through the end of the 2029 campaign.

During the three-quarter break, Ridley was caught with ice on his upper right thigh, and teammate Andrew McGrath comforted a dejected Don.

Jordan Ridley iced it at 3/4 time, seemingly suffering from a quad ailment.

Speaking following Essendon’s defeat by the Cats in the last quarter at Kardinia Park, assistant coach Daniel Giansiracusa of the Bombers disclosed that although Ridley had suffered a quad injury, the severity of the injury remained unknown.

“He’s got a tight quad,” Giansiracusa told the press.

“Obviously, that will get scanned during the week and we’ll see how that goes. He’s an important player for us, so hopefully it’s not too bad.”

On Saturday, Essendon provided an update on the stopper’s health, stating that Ridley had suffered a “low-grade quad strain”.

The club took to X (formerly Twitter) to state that further information would be provided in the coming week.

After injuring the same quad during the Dons’ Round 19 loss to the Western Bulldogs, Ridley missed the last month of Essendon’s 2023 campaign due to injury.

During that critical stretch, Brad Scott’s team would miss Ridley’s presence behind the ball, as the fading Bombers would give up an average of 15.8 goals per week in their final five games.

Due to Ridley’s absence and the gap left by the recent departure of defender Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, former Roo Ben McKay will have more responsibility early in his debut season in red and black.
