SAD NEWS: Another Freshman Guard Is Lost by the Tigers to the NCAA Transfer Portal

The most recent Tiger to leave Baton Rouge is Janae Kent. This offseason, LSU is still looking for a point guard.

True freshman guard Janae Kent of the LSU Tigers is expected to hunt for a new home, sources confirm to LSU Country, marking Kim Mulkey and the team’s third transfer portal exit of the summer.

It was first reported by On3 that Kent planned to use the NCAA Transfer Portal.

The 6-foot-1 guard from Oak Forest, Illinois, was a vital member of LSU’s top recruiting class that included Angelica Velez, Aalyah Del Rosario, and Mikaylah Williams. He was formerly rated as a four-star prospect in the 2023 cycle.

Now that Velez and Kent are about to leave Baton Rouge, both guards have stepped through the portal.

Kent played little in her one season under Kim Mulkey, scoring 1.6 points per game on average as a freshman.

It goes without saying that the LSU team was stacked with talent in 2023–24 after the Tigers signed the nation’s top recruiting class, which included transfers Aneesah Morrow and Hailey Van Lith and SEC Freshman of the Year Mikaylah Williams.

Kent is back in the recruiting fray, hoping to find a new team where he can start playing right away.

After Van Lith, Velez, and Kent declared their plan to use the NCAA Transfer Portal, LSU will be looking for a point guard this summer.

Van Lith will search for a venue to play her brand of basketball after electing to use her COVID year to play a fifth season of collegiate hoops. Thinking of herself as a “pro-type” athlete, she plans to use the 2024–25 season to increase her draft stock.

“You have to kind of look at what type of player you are,” Van Lith said. “There’s some people that have to capitalize in college because they’re not a pro-type player. Their likability is going to stay in college. And I think for me, that’s not the case. I’m a pro-type player. The deals will follow, like Angel said. The one downfall is visibility. And the amount of times we play on ESPN and ABC and all these major television channels, that becomes a lot less when you go to the WNBA where it’s at right now. You’re not going to be in the media as much, but from a brand aspect, as long as you do what you need to do and keep up that part of your life, then brands, they’re going to follow you when you go to the league.”

Now that two transfers are scheduled to visit campus this month, LSU will be attempting to add a point guard through the free agency market going ahead.
